Season and Climate in Bhutan

Bhutan has a season for everyone. The kingdom stretches across three climatic zones from the sub-tropical jungles in the south, to the moderate heights of 2000-2500 meters in the centre, and up to the alpine world of the towering Himalayas. Temperatures in the central valleys do not normally exceed 30°C in the summer and remain around 15°C during winter days.

Spring:
A botanist’s delight. Rhododendrons, wild azaleas, and masses of wild flowers like edelweiss cover the meadows like a carpet. Pear and apple blossoms add a dainty pink and white touch to the valleys.

Summer:
An abundant time of year. Valleys are draped in vibrant green, weeping willows sweep the riverbanks, and resin-filled pine cones glisten in the mountain sun.

Autumn:
Casts a bright golden glow on the landscape. Rice fields ripen to a golden brown under crisp blue skies, while merry pink and white cosmos flowers dot the countryside.

Winter:
The days are full of sunshine while evenings turn chilly. Soft tufts of clouds drape lazily over mountain tops, creating a serene and quiet Himalayan atmosphere.

Bhutan is a mesmerizing country with high mountains and lush green topology. The major motorway runs west-east with connecting roads to the southern border. Many northern sections remain accessible only by hike. Our drivers are certified, cautious, and well-versed in their homeland.

While domestic flights operate between Paro, Bumthang, Gelephu, and Yonphula, the primary mode of transport is by road. Be prepared for the unique geography: some segments include as many as six to seven turns every kilometer!

The average speed for road travel is roughly 45 kilometers per hour. However, the breathtaking vistas of towering mountains, old towns, and beautiful monasteries compensate amply for the lengthy vehicle drives.
